Incoloy 901 Fastener (UNS N09901), size M30×280 mm, is purpose-built for flight-critical gas-turbine hardware. It delivers outstanding yield strength and creep rupture strength, maintaining stable performance under extreme heat and stress, making it the ideal high-reliability fastening solution for aerospace applications.
Does Incoloy 901 Fastener require ageing after welding or installation?
As a rule, Incoloy 901 Fastener should NOT be aged after welding or installation, and in most cases ageing is simply unnecessary. The reasons are outlined below:
As a rule, Incoloy 901 Fastener should NOT be aged after welding or installation, and in most cases ageing is simply unnecessary. The reasons are outlined below:
✅ 1. Incoloy 901 Fastener is a precipitation-hardening super-alloy
Its high strength comes from the precipitation of γ′ (Ni₃(Al,Ti)) and γ″ (Ni₃Nb) phases. Final mechanical properties depend on a closely controlled heat-treatment cycle—typically solution treatment plus a two-step age.

⚠️ 2. Incoloy 901 Fastener is supplied fully heat-treated
Whether commercial or aero-grade, Incoloy 901 Fastener (AMS 5714, ASTM A453 Grade 660, etc.) leaves the mill already solution-treated and aged to the required UTS (≥ 1035 MPa) and yield strength. Re-heating a finished fastener (e.g. for post-weld heat-treatment) redissolves and coarsens the precipitates, causing strength loss and possible grain-boundary embrittlement.

🔥 3. Welding severely degrades Incoloy 901 Fastener properties
Incoloy 901 Fastener has poor weldability; welding a finished bolt is therefore discouraged. If a joint must be made (e.g. stud welding Incoloy 901 Fastener to a casing):
- use a matching filler such as ERNiFeCr-2;
- keep the threaded or load-bearing regions out of the heat zone;
- do NOT age the fastener itself after welding—the optimised microstructure cannot be restored by a second cycle and may be damaged beyond recovery.

📌 4. No post-installation heat-treatment is required
Mechanical installation (torquing, pre-loading) does not alter the microstructure of Incoloy 901 Fastener, so ageing is neither required nor permitted. If local cold-work occurs during assembly, a low-temperature stress-relief (< 600 °C) may be considered, but its effect on fastener strength must be carefully evaluated.

✅ Conclusion:
Do not age Incoloy 901 Fastener after welding (if unavoidable) or after installation.
Best practice is to use fasteners that have already been heat-treated to specification and to avoid any additional thermal cycles. When welding is essential, a qualified team must qualify the procedure and minimise heating of the Incoloy 901 Fastener itself.

When Incoloy 901 Fastener is used in safety-critical engine locations, always follow AMS 5714, ASTM A453 or the OEM technical specification for installation and maintenance to guarantee system safety and service life.
