DIN 933 Hex Bolt – machined from a single piece of SS304 austenitic stainless steel, tensile strength ≥520 MPa. The natural, un-plated finish passes a 96 h salt-spray test without additional coating. What is the equivalent of DIN 933 bolts?
DIN 933 is the former German standard for “hexagon head bolts with thread up to the head”. It was completely superseded by ISO 4017 in the 1970s; the two standards are practically identical over the range M1.6–M52, with the thread running the full length of the shank and mechanical properties taken from the same ISO 898-1 (for carbon steel) or ISO 3506 (for stainless). The only dimensional differences occur in the four large sizes M10, M12, M14 and M22, whose width across flats (s) and across corners (e) are 0.5–1 mm larger in ISO 4017 so they match the current ISO spanner series. All other dimensions, the 6 g tolerance zone, property classes 5.6–12.9 and stainless grades A2-70/A4-80, etc., remain the same. Consequently, worldwide tenders and drawings may simply state “ISO 4017 in lieu of DIN 933” without loss of interchangeability. If your bill of materials lists DIN 933 Hex Bolt, you only need to rename it ISO 4017 Hex Bolt under the present ISO system—dimensions and performance are fully compatible.

The corresponding Chinese standard is GB/T 5783; apart from the addition of the three larger sizes M42, M48 and M56, all other dimensions are identical to ISO 4017. This means that DIN 933 Hex Bolt can be purchased domestically as GB/T 5783 M5×full thread without any re-tooling or drawing changes. The U.S. standard ASME B18.2.3.1M is also a fully threaded hex cap screw, but its across-flats, head height and fillet radius are inch-based conversions, giving 0.1–0.3 mm deviations from DIN 933 Hex Bolt. High-strength grades are limited to A 325M and A 490M, and stainless grades are not specified, so it is only a partial substitute in North-American steel construction; the global default remains ISO 4017.
