Corrosion Resistance of 304 Stainless Steel  
Corrosion resistance is one of the core properties of 304 stainless steel.
 
1. Chromium and Oxide Layer Formation  
304 stainless steel contains 18-20% chromium, which is key to its corrosion resistance. When exposed to air or oxidizing environments, chromium reacts with oxygen to form a dense chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) protective layer on the surface, typically 2-5 nanometers thick. This layer is self-healing; even if mechanically damaged, it can quickly reform in an oxidizing environment, effectively preventing corrosive media (such as oxygen, moisture, acids, and alkalis) from further attacking the base metal. The ASTM A193 B8 Eye Bolt also relies on this protective layer to ensure long-term performance in harsh environments.
 
2. Role of Nickel 
304 stainless steel contains 8-10.5% nickel, which significantly enhances its corrosion resistance, particularly in reducing environments and against pitting corrosion. Nickel stabilizes the austenitic structure, maintaining good toughness at low temperatures and improving resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. For example, in a 3% sodium chloride solution, the pitting potential (Epit) of 304 stainless steel is typically above 300 mV, indicating its resistance in chloride-containing environments. The ASTM A193 B8 Eye Bolt performs exceptionally well in similar environments.
 
3. Specific Corrosion Resistance Performance  
Atmospheric Environments: The ASTM A193 B8 Eye Bolt exhibits almost no corrosion in dry, clean atmospheres. Even in humid or polluted environments (e.g., industrial or marine atmospheres), its corrosion rate is extremely low, typically below 0.002 mm/year.  
 
Water Environments: In fresh or neutral water solutions, 304 stainless steel demonstrates excellent corrosion resistance with very low corrosion rates. However, in chloride-containing water (e.g., seawater), pitting or crevice corrosion may occur. The ASTM A193 B8 Eye Bolt also performs well in these environments.  
 
Acidic Environments: In oxidizing acids (e.g., nitric acid), the ASTM A193 B8 Eye Bolt shows good corrosion resistance. In a 10% nitric acid solution, its corrosion rate is typically below 0.1 mm/year. However, in reducing acids (e.g., hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid), its corrosion resistance is poor, with corrosion rates potentially exceeding 1 mm/year.  
 
Alkaline Environments: In weak alkaline solutions (e.g., sodium hydroxide), 304 stainless steel exhibits good corrosion resistance, but in high-concentration or high-temperature alkaline environments, stress corrosion cracking may occur.
 
4. Pitting and Crevice Corrosion  
304 stainless steel may experience pitting or crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments. The pitting potential (Epit) is a key indicator of its resistance to pitting corrosion, with 304 stainless steel typically showing an Epit of 300-400 mV in a 3% sodium chloride solution. Additionally, the critical pitting temperature (CPT) is another important parameter, with 304 stainless steel having a CPT of approximately 15-25°C, indicating a significant decline in pitting resistance at higher temperatures in chloride environments. The ASTM A193 B8 Eye Bolt also requires careful use in such environments.
 
5. Stress Corrosion Cracking 
304 stainless steel may undergo stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in high-temperature chloride-containing environments. For example, in chloride environments above 50°C, 304 stainless steel may develop cracks under stress. Therefore, its use in high-temperature, high-chloride environments requires caution. The ASTM A193 B8 Eye Bolt also demands special attention in similar conditions.
 
6. Corrosion Resistance in Applications  
Chemical Industry: 304 stainless steel is widely used in corrosion-resistant containers, pipelines, and equipment, particularly in weak acids, weak alkalis, and oxidizing media. The ASTM A193 B8 Eye Bolt also excels in these applications.  
 
Food Processing: Its excellent corrosion resistance and hygienic properties make it an ideal material for food processing equipment.  
 
Marine Engineering: In low-chloride seawater environments, 304 stainless steel is used in ship fittings and pipelines. However, in high-chloride environments, higher-grade corrosion-resistant materials (e.g., 316 stainless steel) are required.
 
7. Limitations  
Although 304 stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance, its performance may be limited in the following environments:  
High-concentration reducing acids (e.g., hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid);  

 
High-temperature, high-chloride environments (susceptible to pitting and stress corrosion cracking);  
 
High-concentration alkaline environments;

8. Improvement Measures  
To enhance the corrosion resistance of 304 stainless steel in specific environments, the following measures can be taken:  
Surface treatments (e.g., passivation, electroplating, or coatings);  
Use of higher-grade stainless steels (e.g., 316L, which contains molybdenum for better pitting resistance);  

 
Design modifications to avoid crevices and stress concentration areas;
