Impact testing is an important method for evaluating the toughness and strength of A453 Gr.660 Class B Stud Bolt material under rapid impact loading. The Charpy impact test is one of the most common impact testing methods. Below is a detailed explanation of the Charpy impact test, including the testing instruments and procedures.  
 
Charpy Impact Test  
Testing Principle: The Charpy impact test measures a material's resistance to impact by applying a rapid impact load to a standardized specimen under specific conditions (e.g., low temperature, room temperature, or high temperature). The specimen is fixed at one end and struck at the other end by a freely falling pendulum hammer. The specimen fractures upon impact, and the kinetic energy of the hammer is converted into energy absorbed by the specimen. The goal of the test is to measure the energy absorbed by the A453 Gr.660 Class B Stud Bolt material sample at the point of fracture.  
 
Instruments Used

Testing Steps

3. Specimen Installation: Secure the specimen in the holder of the Charpy impact tester, ensuring it is stable and the notch is aligned with the direction of the hammer's impact.  
 
4. Release the Impact Hammer: During the test, release the impact hammer to allow it to fall freely and strike the specimen.  
 
5. Energy Calculation: After impact, observe the hammer's drop height and use the energy measurement device to record the value. Calculate the energy absorbed by the specimen using the formula (difference between the hammer's initial height and post-impact height).  
 
6. Result Recording: Based on the results, evaluate the impact resistance of the A453 Gr.660 Class B Stud Bolt specimen at the specified temperature and compare it with the standard value (standard value ≥ 35 J at -40°C) to determine compliance.
