This 10"150LB Non-metallic Insulating Spacer is manufactured to ASME B16.5 standards. Its core is made of Gylon 3500 high-performance modified PTFE, rated for –268 °C to +260 °C. Supplied with G10 insulating sleeve, washers and ZPS steel insert, it forms an integral electrical-insulation and sealing barrier. It does not embrittle at cryogenic temperatures, does not creep at elevated temperatures, withstands strong acids, alkalis and solvents, and distributes surface load evenly. The spacer permanently blocks galvanic corrosion, protecting the flange and valuable equipment. Every batch is 100 % tested for electrical insulation and leakage; full material traceability reports are supplied. It is the first-choice isolation solution for severe duties such as LNG plants, offshore platforms and chlor-alkali facilities.

When should you use a Garlock gasket?
Garlock gaskets are not “use-anywhere” universal gaskets; they are the last-resort answer to “headache” services. When ordinary rubber, asbestos, graphite or virgin-PTFE gaskets leak, crush, age or blow out, or when units shut down because of repeated bolt re-tightening, thermal cycling or chemical attack, it is time for Garlock. If the system also demands electrical isolation, mount a Non-metallic Insulating Spacer between the flanges to eliminate galvanic corrosion completely.

1. Services where running, dripping, seeping, leaking must be stopped
a. Refinery hydrogen line: 10 MPa, 400 °C. Hydrogen’s small molecules penetrate easily; a traditional spiral-wound gasket weeps within six months. After switching to Garlock FLEXSEAL hydrogen-grade low-stress spiral-wound gasket with Controlled-Density metal strip plus graphite, the joint meets TA-Luft ≤ 10 ppm leakage at lower bolt load and runs maintenance-free for three years.

b. Chlor-alkali liquid-chlorine flange: dry chlorine aggressively oxidises most fibre materials; ordinary gaskets turn brittle and powder within 24 h. Garlock GYLON 3504 modified PTFE resists wet and dry chlorine and stays flexible down to –268 °C, giving more than five years’ life and fewer shutdowns for cover removal. If the pipe ends are dissimilar metals, insert a Non-metallic Insulating Spacer to prevent bi-metallic galvanic attack.

2. Insufficient bolt load or low flange rating
Gear-boxes, pump casings and FRP flanges have narrow sealing surfaces and few bolts, so high gasket stress cannot be achieved. MULTI-SWELL 3760 series swells 15-30 % automatically in oil or water, filling defects; it is especially effective on low-pressure water boxes and fuel-oil headers. After adoption in a power-station lube-oil line it stopped the chronic “never-ending drip” of traditional asbestos sheet. Where electrical isolation is also required, a Non-metallic Insulating Spacer can be added to create a dual barrier: seal plus insulation.

3. Severe thermal cycling or fire risk
A catalytic-cracking reactor outlet swings from ambient to 540 °C and back; thermal shock relaxes conventional gaskets. HEAT SHIELD—mica plus graphite composite—passes API 607 fire tests and remains sealed at 1 250 °F (677 °C), making it the first choice for high-temperature oxygen-containing services. Used together with a Non-metallic Insulating Spacer it also provides high-temperature electrical isolation, preventing galvanic currents caused by differential thermal expansion.

4. Dual demand: electrical isolation + corrosion resistance
Offshore platform risers must stop seawater galvanic corrosion and H₂S stress-cracking at the same time. Garlock EVOLUTION non-metallic isolation kit (G-10 sleeve & washers) plus a GYLON sealing layer maintains > 5 kV dielectric strength in 10 % NaCl, CO₂-saturated brine at 150 °C, eliminating bi-metallic galvanic attack. The Non-metallic Insulating Spacer is the core component here: it carries the 150 LB pressure rating while supplying high dielectric strength.

5. Code certification or hygienic requirements
Pharmaceutical ingredient tanks use GYLON BIO-LINE® PTFE, certified to USP Class VI and FDA 21CFR177.1550. It survives 300 CIP/SIP cycles at 135 °C without extractables, meeting GMP audit-traceability requirements. If a potential exists between the stainless tank and the carbon-steel support, a Non-metallic Insulating Spacer is fitted to guarantee electrical isolation and to satisfy FDA limits on metal-ion migration.

6. Cryogenic deep-cold duty
LNG loading-arm –162 °C drain valve: elastomers lose elasticity and metal galls. Garlock GRAPH-LOCK 3125 flexible graphite still rebounds at –250 °C; with low-temperature bolt-tightening procedures it achieves zero-leak opening and closing. At the same time a Non-metallic Insulating Spacer isolates the cold pipe from the support hanger, stopping galvanic corrosion and extending stainless-steel line life.

Summary: whenever the service involves high pressure, high/low temperature cycling, strong corrosion, low flange stress, fire safety, electrical isolation or hygienic codes, ordinary gaskets fail rapidly. Select the appropriate Garlock series at the design stage and, where necessary, add a Non-metallic Insulating Spacer. This one-step, high-reliability choice secures long cycles, low maintenance costs and personnel safety.
