Gylon 3500 Chemical Resistance Gasket is manufactured from modified PTFE, providing full-service sealing from –268 °C to 260 °C. It precisely matches 10"150 LB ASME B16.5 flanges and is supplied as standard with G10 insulating sleeves and ZPS anti-loosening washers. One-time installation delivers zero leakage and zero galvanic corrosion, making it the safety-first choice for chemical, chlor-alkali and LNG plants.

What are the main advantages of Gylon 3500, and how does it differ from asbestos, rubber or other PTFE gaskets?
Gylon 3500 Chemical Resistance Gasket is a high-performance sheet-sealing material produced by Garlock from high-purity PTFE resin and nano-silica through a laminated-modification process. Compared with asbestos, rubber and conventional PTFE gaskets, its advantages are demonstrated in the following five dimensions and are supported by industrial case histories.

I. Chemical inertness – “zero swell” and “zero degradation”
1. Molecular structure: C–F bond energy 485 kJ mol⁻¹; fluorine atoms fully shield the carbon chain; silica filler further constricts penetration channels. Weight gain <0.2 % after 1 000 h in 98 % H₂SO₄, chlorosulfonic acid and dichloromethane.

2. versus asbestos: asbestos delaminates within 24 h in 98 % H₂SO₄ and is classified by WHO as a Group 1 carcinogen; its use is globally banned.

3. versus rubber: FKM and EPDM swell 15–60 % by volume in concentrated acids, and stress-relaxation rebound is <20 %.

4. Case history: At a wet-process phosphoric-acid unit in Huizhou, an acid line originally fitted with EPDM leaked three times in six months; after changing to Gylon 3500 Chemical Resistance Gasket the line has run 28 months without leakage, saving RMB 800 000 per year in shutdown-cleaning costs.

II. Temperature limits – not brittle at –268 °C, not slack at 260 °C
1. Glass-transition temperature (Tg) below –120 °C; still retains 15 % compression rebound in liquid-helium service; at 260 °C, 50 bar saturated steam, bolt residual load retention ≥65 %.

2. versus asbestos: above 400 °C crystal water is driven off and strength collapses.

3. versus rubber: EPDM ceiling 150 °C, FKM only 230 °C; at –50 °C rubber already glass-hardens.

4. Case history: At the Shanghai LNG receiving terminal (–162 °C unloading arms), virgin-PTFE gaskets were “blown out” during precooling because of cold flow; after switching to Gylon 3500 Chemical Resistance Gasket the system passed 50 thermal cycles with zero maintenance, saving RMB 1.2 million each time a re-commissioning was avoided.

III. Creep and torque retention – 18 % vs 25–30 %
1. ASTM F38 creep-relaxation 18 %, 28 % lower than conventional PTFE; after 1 000 h bolt load loss only 35 %, eliminating second hot-torquing.

2. versus virgin PTFE: obvious cold flow, 55–65 % load loss under the same conditions; hot re-torquing required within 48 h of start-up.

3. Case history: On the 200 °C overhead vapour line of a 1.2 Mt/a FCC main fractionator in Nanjing, virgin-PTFE gaskets needed quarterly hot re-torquing at height; after changing to Gylon 3500 Chemical Resistance Gasket the maintenance interval lengthened from 3 months to 18 months, saving 120 man-hours per year.

IV. Pressure capability and surface compensation – 1 200 psi vs ≤600 psi
1. 1/8"thickness rated to 1 200 psi (83 bar); P×T limit 250 000 °F·psig; hexagonal honeycomb surface absorbs tool marks or pitting up to 0.5 mm, so old flanges need no re-machining.

2. versus conventional PTFE: rating ≈600 psi, sensitive to flange finish Ra ≤3.2 µm; a scratch can cause leakage.

3. Case history: 1992 cast-steel 6B flanges in an old Tianjin tank farm had 0.4 mm rust on the sealing face that could not be machined in-situ; with Gylon 3500 Chemical Resistance Gasket the hydro-test at 16 bar passed first time, saving RMB 600 000 in flange-replacement costs.

V. Safety, environmental compliance and life-cycle cost
1. Meets FDA 21 CFR 177.1550 and USDA standards; does not support bacterial growth; low smoke density when burned, passes API 6FB fire test.

2. versus asbestos: carcinogenic, polluting, globally banned; versus rubber: contains sulfur-based plasticisers, rejected in clean rooms.

3. Life-cycle-cost (LCC) analysis: although unit price is 30–50 % higher than conventional PTFE, leakage rate falls by 1–2 orders of magnitude and maintenance intervals lengthen 3–5-fold; investment is usually recovered within 6–9 months.

Conclusion
While inheriting PTFE’s title of “king of plastics” for chemical inertness, Gylon 3500 Chemical Resistance Gasket systematically eliminates the three traditional shortcomings—cold flow, creep and leakage—through nano-silica filling and engineered surface micro-structure, providing a safe, long-life and economical sealing solution for petroleum refining, chlor-alkali, LNG, pharmaceutical and food-and-beverage industries.
