One-Minute Overview

  • Forged weld neck flange to EN 10222-5 in 1.4404 low-carbon steel, 6 inch Class 300LB.
  • Solution annealed at 1050°C and water quenched for a stable austenitic structure.
  • Hub and weld zone checked by dye penetrant and ultrasonic testing.
  • Raised face machined to Ra 3.2-6.3 µm for consistent gasket compression.

The EN10222-5 1.4404 weld neck flange is an open-die forged pressure part for 6 inch lines in Class 300LB. Material 1.4404 is the low-carbon austenitic grade equivalent to AISI F316L. The raised face is machined to a controlled roughness, and the body is heat treated after forging so the austenitic structure is uniform through the hub.

Name: EN10222-5 1.4404 WN Flange
Size: 6 Inch
Pressure: Class 300LB
Material: F316L (1.4404)
Type: WN
Flange Face: RF
Process Method: Forged
Feature: Strong Stiffness, Good Sealing, Corrosion Resistance
Usage: High Temperature, High Pressure and High Sealing Requirements
Standard: EN 10222-5, EN 1092-1 or ASME B16.5 (customizable)

Production starts with hot forging under controlled grain flow, then solution annealing at 1050°C ± 10°C and water quenching, which puts the alloy back into a clean austenitic condition after the deformation. Inspection follows: 100 percent visual, dye penetrant testing to EN 10228-2 and ultrasonic testing to EN 10228-3, aimed at the hub and the weld zone where service stresses land. The molybdenum-bearing chemistry resists pitting, crevice corrosion and intergranular attack, including in chloride-laden environments.

The raised face is machined to Ra 3.2-6.3 µm, which is what lets a spiral wound or PTFE envelope gasket compress predictably and seal. The dimensioning can follow EN 1092-1 or ASME B16.5, so state which you need when you enquire. Fit the hub bore to the pipe, keep the weld clear of the machined face, and bring the bolting up in a star pattern in stages. The tapered neck limits stress concentration at the hub-to-pipe junction, which is the point that decides fatigue life on a 6 inch Class 300 line.

FAQ

Q1. What does solution annealing actually do for the flange?

Hot forging distorts the microstructure and leaves residual strain. Heating to 1050°C ± 10°C dissolves the carbides back into solution, and water quenching holds the austenitic structure instead of letting it age. The result is a body with consistent properties and the corrosion resistance the 1.4404 chemistry promises, rather than a forged shape with an uneven structure.

Q2. PT and UT on a flange — isn't that excessive?

The tests target the hub and the weld zone, which is where a 6 inch Class 300 flange actually carries its load. Dye penetrant to EN 10228-2 catches surface-breaking flaws; ultrasonic testing to EN 10228-3 looks inside the section. On a forged pressure part, finding an indication in the works is far cheaper than finding it in service.

Q3. What surface finish should the raised face have for my gasket?

The face is machined to Ra 3.2-6.3 µm, a band that suits spiral wound and PTFE envelope gaskets: rough enough to bite, fine enough not to cut the sealing element. If your gasket supplier calls for a different finish, tell us with the order, because the face is machined to specification rather than picked off a shelf.

Q4. What payment terms do you accept?

T/T, L/C at sight and other internationally accepted terms. The exact terms are agreed with you before production starts, because the payment schedule has to match the order value, the shipping method and the delivery schedule you need — which is also why we confirm them up front rather than after shipment.
