Robust C4430 sealing gasket is stamped from imported Klingersil C4430 sheet, an aramid-fibre / nitrile-rubber composite certified to ASME B16.5. What is the true temperature window of Klingersil C4430?
Although Robust C4430 sealing gasket is rated for continuous use up to 400 °C,"survives 400 °C"is not the same as"can be used unconditionally at 400 °C". Only by tracing the gasket's behaviour along the full temperature axis can the gradual changes—and sudden inflections—in insulation and sealing performance be seen, providing a solid basis for field selection, life assessment and leak-rate control.
 
1) –40 °C → +20 °C  
At sub-zero temperatures the nitrile phase sits on the edge of glass transition; counter-intuitively, compression-recovery is slightly higher than at room temperature (≈58 %) and gas permeation is at its lowest. A 3 mm Robust C4430 sealing gasket mounted on an Arctic LNG loading arm flange has run for eight years at –35 °C / PN 50 without replacement, helium leakage remaining below 10⁻⁵ mbar·l/s. Note, however, that any moisture absorbed by the sheet can freeze and grow ice crystals between plies, generating micro-cracks. Dry the gasket for 2 h at 80 °C before installation if it has been exposed to water.
 
2) +20 °C → +150 °C  
The"golden plateau". Aramid skeleton plus rubber binder remains in the high-elastic region: stress-relaxation <5 % per 100 h, thickness loss only 0.03 mm. A coastal refinery has used 1.5 mm Robust C4430 sealing gasket in the first-stage high-pressure pump of a seawater-desalination unit (6 000 ppm Cl⁻, 90 °C, 1.2 MPa); after 26 000 h the joint was opened and the gasket still showed an unbroken seal line with no electrochemical pitting. Within this range the sheet also acts as an electrical insulator (surface resistivity ≥50 MΩ) and, together with the G10 bush, blocks stray currents up to 1 000 V.
 
3) +150 °C → +250 °C  
Oxidative cross-linking of the rubber phase begins; Robust C4430 sealing gasket stiffens and compression drops from 11 % to about 7 %, but recovery stays ≥50 %. A hot retorque is usually enough to maintain ANSI 150 LB integrity. In one FCC oil-and-gas line (220 °C / 0.9 MPa) a Robust C4430 sealing gasket plus ZPS washer leaked 0.3 mL/min after 12 000 h—well below the plant maintenance threshold of 1 mL/min. If the medium contains >15 % steam and the temperature exceeds 200 °C, request a steam-suitability confirmation from the supplier.
 
4) +250 °C → +350 °C  
Thermal decomposition of the rubber binder accelerates; weight loss is roughly 1 % per 100 h and thickness-recovery falls below 40 %. Sealing now relies on the residual crush of the aramid skeleton. A 2 mm Robust C4430 sealing gasket in a heat-transfer-oil loop (320 °C / 0.4 MPa) did not leak initially, but after three months residual bolt load had fallen 30 % and slight weeping appeared. Torque was raised 15 % and disc springs were added; the joint then survived another six months. For this bracket raise the design seating stress to ≥35 MPa and sample-inspect every 4 000 h.
 
5) +350 °C → +400 °C  
The material limit is now in sight. The rubber is almost completely carbonised and the gasket becomes brittle; recovery is <25 %. Sealing is achieved only by"brute-force"crush at very low internal pressure (<0.3 MPa) and very high bolt load. In a Chinese test rig, Robust C4430 sealing gasket survived 96 h in 400 °C dry air at 0.15 MPa with a leak rate of 5 mL/min—just inside the 10 mL/min limit of DIN 3535—but when pressure was raised to 0.5 MPa the gasket ruptured within 10 min. Industry therefore treats 350 °C as the"economic ceiling"; 400 °C is reserved for emergency, short-term, low-pressure (≤Class 150) duty where a controlled micro-leak is acceptable, and the gasket must be visually inspected every shift and replaced every 500 h.
 
Summary  
- Continuous, pressurised, long-cycle duty: ≤250 °C is the safest choice.  
- 250 °C – 350 °C: raise seating stress, add disc springs, shorten inspection intervals.  
- 350 °C – 400 °C: special-case only—low pressure, short duration, monitored replacement.  
- At every temperature the chemical medium, flange material, bolt material and electrical-isolation requirements must be evaluated together; if necessary use software to verify the PT value of Robust C4430 sealing gasket.
