Saturated steam both plasticises and extracts NBR. Experience shows that above 220 °C Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket blisters and loses binder. If bolt load is raised 20 % and a sheet < 1.5 mm is used, the gasket can safely handle ~ 210 °C in 16 bar(g) saturated-steam lines, but life is usually only 12–18 months.

At 23 °C on flanges with Ra ≤ 3.2 µm, hydro-tests can be short-term bumped to 65 bar without leakage. Once temperature exceeds 100 °C, however, the maximum allowable pressure for the same thickness of Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket falls roughly 1:1.5, dropping to about 25 bar at 300 °C.

III. Down-to-earth examples
