Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket takes an aramid-fibre-reinforced NBR-composite sheet as its core, couples it with G10 insulating sleeves and washers, and thereby delivers a dual guarantee of electrical isolation plus sealing at 400 °C, 150 LB. What are the absolute temperature and pressure limits of the C-4400 gasket?  
Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket (C-4400 gasket) is a general-purpose non-asbestos sheet compressed from aramid fibres and nitrile rubber (NBR). Balancing temperature, pressure and chemical compatibility, it is widely used for flange sealing in petro-chemicals, power generation, ship-building, paper and food industries. The two limits are explained separately below, with field-oriented data points for clarity.
 
I. Temperature limits  
1. Peak short-term temperature: ≈ 400 °C  
This is the temperature Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket can survive for minutes to a few hours, typically during emergency shutdowns or steam-outs. The fibre skeleton remains intact, but the NBR suffers noticeable oxidative weight-loss and its recovery drops; long-term operation at this extreme is therefore not recommended.
 
2. Continuous safe temperature: ≈ 175 °C  
Between 150 °C and 175 °C the aramid fibres decompose very slowly and the NBR cross-link density changes only acceptably. Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket keeps > 50 % recovery and < 20 % thickness loss, so most plants treat 175 °C as the day-after-day, year-after-year upper limit.
 
3. Steam caveat: ≈ 200–220 °C  
Saturated steam both plasticises and extracts NBR. Experience shows that above 220 °C Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket blisters and loses binder. If bolt load is raised 20 % and a sheet < 1.5 mm is used, the gasket can safely handle ~ 210 °C in 16 bar(g) saturated-steam lines, but life is usually only 12–18 months.
 
II. Pressure limits  
1. Laboratory peak: 50 MPa (≈ 7 250 psi)  
Per DIN 52913, 2 mm sheet held at 300 °C for 16 h still retains 25 MPa residual compressive stress, showing that Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket has not collapsed.
 
2. Field recommendation: 40 bar (≈ 580 psi)  
Taking flange rigidity, bolt stretch and field temperature swings into account, KLINGER, Garlock and others list 40 bar in their data sheets, covering PN10–PN40 and Class 150/300 flange series; the same figure applies to Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket.
 
3. Instant shock: up to 65 bar  
At 23 °C on flanges with Ra ≤ 3.2 µm, hydro-tests can be short-term bumped to 65 bar without leakage. Once temperature exceeds 100 °C, however, the maximum allowable pressure for the same thickness of Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket falls roughly 1:1.5, dropping to about 25 bar at 300 °C.
 
III. Down-to-earth examples  
- Ex. 1: Atmosphere tower overhead line in a refinery, 160 °C / 12 bar design, 1 mm Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket. After three years’ run the gasket still showed good recovery and no permeation leak.  

 
- Ex. 2: 12 bar(g) saturated-steam main in a paper mill, 192 °C. Former graphite composite delaminated after frequent blow-outs. Switching to 1.5 mm Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket and raising bolt torque 15 %, the 18-month shutdown revealed only surface micro-cracks; seal level still DIN 3535-6, class V-0.  
 
- Ex. 3: Offshore fire-water pump hydro-tested at 1.5 × rating, 50 bar ambient, 30 min hold, 2 mm Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket showed no tear-drop leakage, meeting API 6A PSL2 temporary seal demand; but if the platform required 70 bar continuous duty, a metal-reinforced sheet would be needed.
 
IV. Take-away  
- Treat 175 °C / 40 bar as the “all-weather” safe box for Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket.  

 
- Occasional steam-outs can reach 210 °C, yet pressure must simultaneously be lowered to ~ 16 bar.  
 
- 400 °C and 50 MPa are laboratory survival extremes, not service figures.  
 
- Temperature and pressure must be considered together: for every 50 °C rise, allowable pressure is roughly halved.
 
Follow the rule “temperature first, pressure follows”, add flange stiffness, bolt load and medium aggressiveness, and Klingersil C4400 Isolation Gasket will deliver its best cost-effective performance inside the safe envelope.
