In daily life, we may rarely come into direct contact with steel, but hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel plates are everywhere. From the steel structures that support skyscrapers to the bodies of moving vehicles, from household appliances to everyday tools—these two types of steel plates serve various industries with their distinct characteristics.
Though both belong to the steel family, their processing methods result in vastly different properties and application areas.
01 Production Process: Temperature Determines the Essence
The hot-rolling process is carried out at high temperatures. Specifically, steel ingots or billets are heated to a high temperature of 1100–1250°C and then passed through rolling mills for plastic deformation.

This high-temperature rolling breaks down the casting structure of the steel ingot, refines the grain, and eliminates microstructural defects, resulting in a denser and more uniform material.
In contrast, the cold-rolling process is done at room temperature. It uses hot-rolled steel plates as raw material, which are first pickled to remove the oxide scale, and then rolled below the recrystallization temperature. This process, which produces materials like Cold Rolled A-Grade Square Tube, is essentially a further processing step of hot-rolled sheets. It induces significant plastic deformation through cold working, thereby increasing the yield strength of the steel. Note that the term "cold" here is relative to the "hot" in hot rolling—it doesn’t mean extremely low temperatures.

Hot-rolled steel plates typically have a dark brown or purplish-black surface due to the oxide scale formed during high-temperature rolling.
Even after treatment, the surface remains relatively rough, with low smoothness and possible imperfections like pockmarks.
Cold-rolled steel plates, on the other hand, have a completely different appearance. Since they are rolled at room temperature without forming oxide scale, their surface quality is excellent—gray in color, smooth to the touch, and can even achieve a mirror-like finish.
Cold-rolled plates are generally harder and stronger, with a smooth and flat surface that is less prone to deformation or cracking.

Hot-rolled steel plates offer good toughness and ductility. Although their mechanical properties are not as strong as those of cold-worked steel, they are sufficient for most conventional applications.
However, after hot rolling, non-metallic inclusions in the steel may be flattened into sheets, potentially causing delamination, which significantly reduces the material’s tensile performance along the thickness direction.
Cold-rolled steel plates, due to work hardening, exhibit increased strength and hardness, but their ductility and toughness decrease accordingly.

Cold-rolled plates can achieve a better yield-to-tensile ratio, but because the yield point is close to the tensile strength, they offer less warning before failure. When the load exceeds the allowable limit, sudden failure can occur.

Hot-rolled steel plates are divided into thick plates (thickness > 4 mm) and thin plates (0.35–4 mm).
Their thickness and width tolerances are relatively loose, and edge defects like waves, folded edges, and coil set are common.
Cold-rolled steel plates are only available in thin sheets (0.2–4 mm), but with much higher precision. The thickness tolerance of cold-rolled strip steel is typically within 0.01–0.03 mm.
Cold-rolled plates can be made much thinner—down to 0.001 mm—which is difficult to achieve with hot rolling.

Based on their different characteristics, the two types of steel are used in different areas.

They are found in automotive body panels, chassis, home appliances (refrigerators, washing machine shells), architectural decoration (roofs, walls), and electrical equipment. A-Grade Rectangular Tube, often manufactured from cold-rolled strip for precise dimensions and excellent surface finish, is a typical example of such high-precision applications.
Cold-rolled plates offer corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and good weldability, making them ideal substrates for coated and color-coated sheets.
