A182 F304 Socket Weld Flange
One-Minute Overview
- Socket weld flange forged in A182 F304 austenitic stainless steel.
- The pipe sits in the socket and is fillet welded, keeping the bore aligned.
- 304 steel resists corrosion in water, food and mild chemical service.
- Chosen for small bore stainless lines in water, food, pharmaceutical and chemical plants.
An A182 F304 socket weld flange is the stainless answer to a small bore joint. F304 is the austenitic stainless grade familiar from sheet and tube, forged here into a flange body so the hub carries pressure and bending rather than relying on the weld alone. The pipe end sits inside the socket and is fillet welded on the outside, which lines the bore up without a backing ring or a second welder inside the pipe. Austenitic structure keeps the part tough at low temperature and gives it the general corrosion resistance that makes the grade a default in water and food service.
Fabrication is where most of the value is won or lost. The socket bore and the pipe end must both be clean and free of oil before welding, a small gap is left at the bottom of the socket so the pipe can expand when the weld cools, and the fillet is run with a matching stainless consumable. Because 304 work-hardens and pulls as it cools, tack in at least two places and check the flange face before finishing. Keep stainless tooling away from carbon steel benches to avoid iron contamination, and passivate the weld if the line will see chlorides or washdown. Typical use is water and wastewater, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and light chemical piping. Size, facing and pressure class are confirmed per inquiry, and a detailed specification sheet is available on request.
